MARK GIBBS
Mark's artwork moves between sculpture and painting; he creates complex sculptures featuring animals and sometimes ships, and mysterious landscape paintings.
Influenced by archaeology Mark Gibbs' sculptures resemble ancient ritual artefacts with many layers of meaning. Referencing shamanism, the animals are built from the inside out starting with a skeleton, often using bundles of wire to represent the muscle groups.
All his work is a meditation on mortality; undercutting objects of power to reveal their vulnerability. The focus of much of his most recent work has been the First World War such as the role of Cavalry; he sees these sculptures as alternative war memorials.
Mark has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, and has been shortlisted for the £10K David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year 5 times. He was also included in the 2017 New Lights Prize. Mark states; "Whatever the concept, the physicality of materials and the process of making is vital."
